The emergence of remote working and new collaboration methods mean organisations must adopt more flexible IP-based infrastructure, the report said.
“Business requirements must drive infrastructure and technology deployment,” said Mark Blowers, enterprise architectures practice director.
A services-based approach is necessary for these new methods of work, Blowers said.
“There should be a move towards the provision of common integrated communication services, which are ideal for catering for a complex and distributed environment. Web services can also be utilised to mobilise information to all stakeholders,” Blower said.
Instead of relying on old infrastructure, Butler Group said that organisations should consider using data networks – both fixed and wireless – to run services such as voice, video, data and storage.
Blowers said this enabling of new work methods is, in fact, the ultimate goal of unified communications – not a reduction in operational expenditure.
“The real value afforded by unified communications and collaboration solutions ultimately arises from improvements to business processes, enhancement of stakeholder interactions, the optimisation of workflow, and driving innovation in the business,” he said.
