The extension will be completed by 2009. The network currently covers 96% of the population.
Optus CEO Paul O’Sullivan said that, after completion of the extension, Optus will be the only carrier “capable of challenging the incumbent’s network reach”.
“The extended Optus network will bring choice and value to people who have been limited to the incumbent’s network for too long,” he said.
At least 750 new base stations will be deployed, to cover an extra 400,000 square km, using HSPA technology.
